Botox and fillers are the two most commonly chosen rejuvenating treatments in aesthetic medicine and cosmetology, yet many people use these terms interchangeably without realising the fundamental differences between them. Botox, or botulinum toxin, relaxes the facial muscles, while fillers, most often based on hyaluronic acid, replace lost volume in the skin. The choice between them does not depend on the client's preference, but on the type of concern we want to correct. This article explains the differences and helps you choose the right treatment.
Botox versus fillers - what is the difference?
Botox is a prescription product containing botulinum toxin type A which, once injected into a muscle, blocks its tension. The skin over the relaxed muscle stops creasing. It is the most effective answer to dynamic wrinkles, the ones formed by facial expression. Fillers work completely differently: they are hyaluronic acid based products that replace lost volume in the dermis. The effect of fillers is visible immediately after the treatment, whereas botox only starts working after 5-14 days. How long they last also differs: fillers hold for 6-18 months depending on the product and the area, and botox for 3-6 months.
Which wrinkles call for botox and which for fillers?
The split follows directly from how the two work. Dynamic wrinkles appear and deepen with facial expression. They include the frown line between the brows, crow's feet around the eyes and horizontal forehead lines. This is botox territory. Static wrinkles, visible at rest (nasolabial folds, marionette lines, fine lines above the lip), are best corrected with fillers. Loss of volume, lip contouring and augmentation and sharpening the facial contour are also the domain of fillers. Botox cannot rebuild tissue volume or shape a contour, which is why it is ineffective in these cases.
Can botox and fillers be combined in one treatment?
Wypełniacze idą do dolnej części: ust, policzków, owalu, bruzd nosowo-wargowych. Przywracają pożądaną objętość i kontur.
